What is a Compote?
A flavorful compote brings any meal (from the casual weeknight to the special occasion) to a delicious conclusion. Whether it’s served alone or in combination with other desserts, you’ll love the irresistible color, texture, and taste it adds.
At its simplest a compote consists of fruit (be it fresh, canned, or dried) that is stewed in a simple syrup of sugar and other flavorings, spices, and wines or liqueurs. While a wide range of fruit compotes exist, the most commonly found offerings include: fig, pear, apples, berry, and rhubarb, making this tropical pineapple vanilla and coconut variety extra special.
Coming from the French word for ‘mixture,’ compotes are almost always combined with chunky fruit. This thicker texture helps differentiate a compote from coulis (which is pureed until smooth). One of our oldest desserts, compotes, originated in medieval Europe. The concept and execution of this ancient dessert has changed little over the centuries, proving that the simple pleasures are some of the best.
