Summer Black French Truffles - Brushed First Choice

When the fresh truffle season ends (yes, a dark day indeed in kitchens around the world), we're thankful that there is an alternative to get our truffle fix. Enter preserved truffles. Summer truffles will not be very striking out of the jar, and will need to be heated up or cooked with to bring out the flavors. Best for used in hot dishes like risottos, omelets and mashed potatoes. The heat of the dish itself will help bring out the aroma. An even more successful way to enhance the dish would be to add as well some truffle oil, butter or truffle paste (oils and butters are usually more aromatic than canned truffles, and can preserve the fragrance of the dish longer).

Preserved truffles are a nice, budget-friendly way to add visual truffle appeal to dishes. However, if you are looking to add the pungent aroma and taste of truffles to your dish, we recommend that you explore our fresh truffle selection at http://www.gourmetfoodstore.com. Jarred or canned truffles, sold by us or any other vendor, are mere shadows of their fresh truffle selves and will not, by themselves, deliver the aroma or flavor of fresh truffles. They are great to use with truffle oil – the oil will add the flavor, the preserved truffles the truffle “look”, but preserved truffles should be used only to garnish a dish, or in conjunction to truffle butter and oil during those times when fresh truffles are out of season or when the budget doesn’t allow for the real thing. Preserved truffles out of the jar or can have almost no flavor or odor. If you are looking for the true flavor of a fresh truffle, then please visit our fresh truffle page and purchase a fresh truffle - we carry the markets best selection of fresh truffles while they are available at unbeatable prices. They had no flavor and aroma. There is no reason to purchase them. They add nothing to a dish except black specks.

Questions and Answers

Q:Can these truffles be used to help train our truffle hunting dog in our own backyard?
A:These truffles will have little to no aroma, they are mainly used for garnishing, while relying on other flavored truffle products such as butter, oil, pastes, etc. for the aroma. Due to this they are not suitable for training.
Q:Is the flavour more intense in an oil compared to the preserved truffles?
A:Preserved truffles have little to no flavor out of the jar, they need to be warmed up and used in conjunction with truffle flavored products (such as oils, butters, sauces, etc.). Preserved truffles are mainly used for garnishing, truffle oils are used for adding flavor so yes, the flavor will be more intense in them compared to the preserved truffles.
Q:If I don't open the jar, how long is this product good for?
A:The shelf life of the unopened jar is 1 year.
Q:after opening, can they be frozen or dried?
A:You may be able to freeze or dry these truffles but there's a strong risk of compromising the flavor and quality.
Q:How many truffles are in a 1 oz jar
A:A jar of 1oz will contain 1 or 2 truffles.
Q:after the jar is opened how do you store the unused portion?
A:After opening, store the jar in the refrigerator and use the contents within one to two weeks.
