What is Organic Food?
In a world where the term organic is bandied about rather liberally, the true meaning of the word can be lost. The practical definition of organic food refers to how the food is produced. Any food item that has the certified organic emblem somewhere on its packaging promises to be raised or grown free of all artificial chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, and GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). That means that the pre-made foods like condiments, dressings, sauces, etc. if organic, will be free of any artificial additives as well, and that term “additive” covers a lot. Artificial sweeteners, coloring, flavoring, preservatives, and MSG (Monosodium Glutamate), cannot be used in the production of organic items. Livestock raised organically is never given any antibiotics or hormones. And the crops that are grown in this fashion receive natural fertilizers and do not use the harsh pesticides and herbicides other plants receive.
Is Organic Food Better For You?
Anyone who’s perused their local supermarket shelves can confidently tell you the term organic generally comes with quite a markup. It may seem rather steep to those who do not realize what they’re getting in return, but after some basic research, you may be surprised to find that organic food provides you with more than generic foods do in every way.
Countless studies have shown that organic food carries higher levels of antioxidants and micronutrients by as much as 69% compared to their generic counterparts. Simply replacing your regular purchases with the organic option is comparable to eating 1-2 extra portions of fruits and vegetables every day!
While organic food directly helps your health in terms of delivering foods with greater and more diverse nutritional value, it also indirectly helps our planet. Organic farming methods improve soil quality and promote groundwater conservation. It also reduces pollution, making it a great boon to the local flora and fauna and, in short, a true help to our world’s environment as a whole.
