If there’s a scale in the sesame seed world (and there is), golden sesame seeds rank above their white and black counterparts. It’s not only their incredible fragrance and their rich, nutty flavor, but also because our Golden Sesame Paste comes from Wadaman, a family-owned company based in Osaka helmed by Etsuji Wada, a 4th generation owner who personally oversees the seed roasting and has done so for 40 years.
The locally grown seeds are carefully crushed under a ceramic mill. Wadaman roasts their sesame seeds under high temperatures, developing a deep and rich taste, almost caramelized. The brown paste is rich and luscious in texture, almost like peanut butter. In Chinese cuisine, golden sesame paste is used for noodles, dipping sauces, for Chinese buns and sometimes just spread like peanut butter. Golden sesame paste is very thick, so make sure to gently spread before using. It’s great when combined with other ingredients like oil to make sauces for salads, so don’t be scared to experiment. Much like peanut butter, sesame paste is rich in protein and iron – plus, it’s delicious!
