About Shrimp

Are Shrimp Healthy?

In a word, yes! Shrimp are the health-conscious individual's best friend, offering a delicious option; packed with protein and full of vitamins and minerals. They are also an excellent source of Iodine, an important mineral that many people are deficient in. Fatty acids like Omega-6 and Omega-3 are also well represented among shrimps' lineup of helpful nutrients. Low in calories (84 per serving) and high in protein and valuable nutrients, be sure to add this tasty crustacean into your regular meal rotation for a healthy and delicious dish!

How to Devein Shrimp

While deveining is an optional step, many like to include it in their shrimp preparation because it gives shrimp a tidier look. In larger shrimp, it also eliminates any possibility of the occasional gritty bite, which makes it well worth the effort. A pronounced dark line the digestive tract or ‘vein’ runs the length of their body. While there are specialty deveining tools available, unless you're cleaning copious amounts of shrimp, this is probably one of those single-use knick-knacks you can skip; a paring knife works just as well for the average person’s needs. Remove head, legs, and shell, then using a knife, make a long shallow incision down the back exposing the vein; use your knife or fingertips to pull it free and discard. That’s it! Simple and quick, it’s a great trick to have in your culinary arsenal.
